Mapping Chinese Loans to Africa

In recent years China has loaned money to many African nations. To better understand this important topic, researchers at the John Hopkins University SAIS China-Africa Initiative compiled a dataset showing where these loans have gone, when they were given, their associated industries, their purposes, and amounts. Schema collaborated closely with their team to design and build a website to visualize this data. The site includes interactive maps and lists that allow researchers and the public to discover patterns, access specific information, and download data. View the site.

An interactive map allows users to explore loans by country, year, industry, and amount (both number of loans and totals in US dollars). A list view visualizes the data in a more linear way, while a third interface provides a deep dive into the information.
